Barner has a clearer path to immediate snaps as a functional in-line TE who can earn trust as a blocker and leak-out target. At 24.3, he’s closer to being plug-and-play for bye weeks if the depth chart thins out, which matters for contenders hunting cheap points. His cost is materially lower, so you’re paying for role access and short-term usability rather than ceiling.
Gadsden is younger (23.1) and priced accordingly because the market is buying the receiving-upside profile more than the “complete TE” role. On the Chargers, he has a cleaner path to becoming a designed-touch/move TE if he earns a niche, which is how fantasy-relevant TEs often pop. The 27.2% premium is basically a bet that his route/target potential beats Barner’s snap-based production path.
Barner at the discount is the better contender buy if you need near-term TE depth and don’t want to pay for uncertain future targets.
Gadsden is the better rebuild bet because age + receiving ceiling is what appreciates, even if production comes later.
If you’re neutral, take Barner unless you specifically need to swing for a higher-variance receiving outcome, in which case pay up for Gadsden.
Worth more?
Gadsden is worth more in pure dynasty value today, but Barner is the better points-per-dollar bet.
Trade?
I’d move Barner + a small add for Gadsden in a rebuild, but I’d rather trade down from Gadsden to Barner and pick up a 3rd/4th in a contending build.
Superflex?
In superflex, I’m even less inclined to pay a premium for fringe TEs, so Barner becomes the preferred value unless you’re intentionally chasing upside.
