WHAT A REBUILD ACTUALLY IS
A rebuild is a decision to trade present value for future value. You sell your win-now players, the veterans who are good today but declining, and turn them into young players and draft picks that will be good during your next contention window.
The key word is decision. A rebuild is a choice you make on purpose, not something that happens to you because your team is bad. Bad teams that keep making win-now moves stay bad. Teams that commit to a rebuild and execute it climb out. The difference is having a plan and the discipline to follow it.

WHEN TO START A REBUILD
The hardest part is admitting it is time. Here is how to tell, without the wishful thinking.
Look at your roster's age against your record. The average championship roster was 27.4 years old, so age alone is not a death sentence. Plenty of "old" teams win. The problem is old AND not winning. If your core is aging, your value is dropping every week, and you are not actually contending, you are holding depreciating assets for no reason. That is the signal.
THE "ONE MORE YEAR" TRAP
The trap is the "one more year" team. It is good enough to make you hope but not good enough to win. Those teams hold their aging vets one season too long, watch the value bleed out, and end up rebuilding anyway, just from a worse starting point. If you are honestly not a contender, the best time to sell was last month. The second best time is now.
HOW TO SELL (TIMING MATTERS)
Once you commit, sell smart. Your veterans are worth the most when contenders are most desperate for them, which is in-season and especially near the trade deadline.
Sell in-season, not the offseason
A rebuilder who dumps everything in the quiet offseason leaves value on the table. A rebuilder who sells into deadline desperation gets a premium.
Turn present into future
Every win-now vet you hold is losing value. Convert them into the youngest, highest-upside players and picks you can get.
Keep your young core
Move the players whose value will decline, but keep the young pieces who will still be good in your next window. A total teardown is rarely the fastest path back.

Acquire cornerstones, not depth
Champions concentrated 36.5% of value in their top 3 players. You need a few elite young assets, not a roster full of average ones.
Target ascending players
Buy players whose value is rising, not just players who are young. A 23-year-old who is not improving is not a rebuild piece. A 22-year-old who just broke out is.
Stack early draft picks
Early first-round rookie picks produce startable dynasty assets at the highest rate. Accumulate them through trades and losing, then hit on a couple to form your core.
Know when to flip
A rebuild has an end date. Once your young core matures and your window opens, become a buyer. Use your accumulated picks and depth to add the final pieces. Hoarding assets you never cash in is just a slower way to lose.
