The Case for C.J. Stroud
Stroud is the clear long-term dynasty anchor: younger, locked-in starter, and already producing at a level that keeps his weekly floor and ceiling intact for years. In superflex, that stability plus age insulation holds value through coaching/roster changes and makes him easier to build around. A 12.2% value gap is reasonable for the much safer multi-year outlook and higher probability of remaining a top-12 QB asset.
The Case for Sam Darnold
Darnold’s appeal is cost-relative: he can be a playable QB2 when the situation cooperates, and at his price he can help a contender patch the position without paying elite rates. If he’s starting and supported by scheme/weapons, he can deliver spike weeks that matter in SF formats. The downside is obvious—shorter leash, more variance, and a much lower certainty of being a locked-in starter beyond the near term.
Verdict by Team Situation
If you're contending: If you’re contending, Stroud is the preferred buy if you can afford it; Darnold is only the move if you need a cheaper stopgap QB2 and can’t pay up.
If you're rebuilding: If you’re rebuilding, take Stroud every time—age, job security, and liquidity crush Darnold’s fragile profile.
If value is close: This isn’t close in dynasty: the 12.2% gap is justified, and I’d only pivot to Darnold if the add-on value is meaningfully significant.
FAQ
Worth more? Stroud is worth more by a comfortable margin because his multi-year starter certainty and age insulation are premium in superflex.
Trade? I’d trade Darnold plus a meaningful 1st-equivalent add (or strong young starter) for Stroud; otherwise hold Stroud.
Superflex? In SF, prioritize Stroud as a core QB1 asset, while Darnold is a roster-filler QB2/3 whose value can evaporate quickly.
