WHERE A CHAMPION’S CORE ACTUALLY COMES FROM

Roughly 63% of a champion’s core was either drafted or held, not traded for. Trades built about a fifth of the winning core. So the drafters are more right than the dealers, but neither owns the whole truth. You build the foundation by drafting well and holding your good players. Trades are how you round it out and push over the top.

THE DRAFT IS THE FOUNDATION

Here’s the uncomfortable truth for the trade-obsessed: you cannot trade your way to a title from a bad draft. The single biggest source of championship talent was players the manager drafted or acquired early and then simply kept. Not flipped, not churned — kept.

That points to a skill dynasty undervalues: patience. The managers who won didn’t constantly reshuffle their rosters. They identified good players, often in the startup or through rookie drafts, and held them while their value and production compounded. Roughly 43% of championship cores came from the draft alone (startup plus rookie). Add the held-and-waiver players and the majority of a title team was homegrown.

The practical lesson: your drafts matter enormously, and so does the discipline to not overtrade the good players you land. Every startup and rookie pick is a potential piece of a future champion. Treat them that way.

TRADES ARE THE FINISHER, NOT THE FOUNDATION

Now the part the drafters get wrong: trades built more than a fifth of championship cores, and that’s not nothing. Roughly one in five of the best players on winning teams arrived via trade. So trading absolutely matters — it’s just doing a specific job.

Trades are how champions upgrade and consolidate, turning a good roster into a great one. They’re the finishing move: you’ve drafted and held a solid core, and a well-timed trade adds the elite piece that pushes you over the top.

And the numbers back up how surgical this is. On the average championship roster, only about 7.5% of the entire roster was acquired via trade. Champions weren’t churning their whole team. They made a small number of targeted, high-impact deals.

WHEN CHAMPIONS ADD THEIR PIECES

Timing tells the same story. We looked at when champions acquired their core players, and the vast majority — about 90% — were drafted or already held before the season even started. The core was largely set from day one.

The trades that did shape the core clustered early — around 6% came in the first few weeks of the season, tapering off as the year went on. Champions largely knew who they were coming out of the draft and offseason, then made early, decisive moves to shore up the roster before the season got away from them. They weren’t assembling their team on the fly in a late-season panic. They built it deliberately and adjusted early.

THE BLUEPRINT

The drafters and the dealers are both half right. You draft and hold to build the foundation, then trade surgically to finish the job. Do both well and you look a lot like the teams that actually won.
